Flashing Lights

The night was full of glitz and glam. Beautiful dresses and stylish tuxes, all with their own unique touches, the juniors and seniors piled into Receptions in Erlanger for a long night of memories they will never forget. The night began at 8 p.m. and ended at midnight.

This year’s theme was “Flashing Lights”. The room was decorated with elaborate fluorescent balloons including a built balloon archway for arriving students.

“The DJ was awesome! I danced all night long. The only thing I wish we had was an after-prom,” said senior Lisa Wagner.

“Dinner was way better this year than it was last year!” said senior Rich Morgan.

Prom court was announced at 11 o’clock that night.

Love, Fairies, and Dreams

What do fairies, a forest, and four teenagers have in common? The Conner High School Drama Club.

The Drama Club, sponsored by Melissa McCaughan, is going to perform A Midsummer Night’s Teen, a spoof of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, on April 24-26. In an exclusive interview, McCaughan answered a few of the curious question presented to her:

Cougar: Did you write this version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream?

McCaughan: No. We purchased it from a catalog.

Cougar: Why did you pick A Midsummer Night’s Teen?

McCaughan: The officers picked it because we wanted to do a comedy and thought it sounded funny.

Cougar: What is the plot of A Midsummer Night’s Teen?

McCaughan: Two teenagers want to go to the prom together,r but the girl’s father won’t allow it. The girl’s friend wants to go with a football player. They go into the woods together. A group of fairies play a trick on them and make everyone fall in love with the wrong people. Comedy ensues. All is set right again and the play ends at the prom.

Cougar: What is the setting of A Midsummer Night’s Teen?

McCaughan: Athens High School, Teen Dream Park

Cougar: Who are the main characters?

McCaughan: Most of the cast members have a prominent role. The teenage lovers are Lyle Sanders, Mia Etha, Helen Nader and Dean Metrius.

In the original play, Hermia refuses to obey her father’s order to marry Demetrius and plans to run away with Lysander, her lover. The two confide in Helena, the former fiancé of Demetrius, and she hopes to gain his trust back by revealing the plot of elopement. Demetruis, followed by Helena, embarks upon a journey into the forest to catch Hermia and Lysander.

Meanwhile, the Fairy King Oberon and his wife, Titania, are fighting and he bids his servant Puck to trick his wife. Puck finds a flower with the power to make one fall in love with the first person they see when they wake from slumber. Not only does Puck place it upon Titania, but on Lysander at the King’s bidding. Lysander falls in love with Helena, then Puck causes Demetrius to fall with her as well and Hermia, jealous, almost fights Helena. Eventually order is restored and the four lovers are carried off and wed. Lysander and Hermia are united as Demetrius and Helena rekindle love.

The version Conner’s Drama Club is performing centers around a prom with the teenage lovers Lyle Sanders (Lysander), Mia Ethan (Hermia), Helen Nader (Helena) and Dean Metrius (Demetrius) going off into the woods where tricks will be played. The plot promises fun and entertainment for its audience.

The story of these four teenagers will not be the last The Conner Cougar online sees of them. Thanks to McCaughan, video and pictures from every Friday’s practice will be available and a feature upon the actors and director will appear every week leading up to the play.

A Chance for Recovery

For students who are struggling to keep a passing grade in a class, but did not receive a credit for that class, are eligible for credit recovery as long as their final semester grade ranged from a 60-69. In order to complete the program successfully, all assignments must be attempted including the final exam, and students must have received a minimum of 70% on each assignment.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for a student who has gotten close, but did not earn their credit,” said teacher Andy Wyckoff.

There are a few options students have to gain the credits that are required in order to graduate, since students are no longer permitted to re-take a core class in an eighteen week semester. Other options besides credit recovery include summer school, the Compass Program, or an online course through UK.

“Credit Recovery is the least intrusive of the four options,” said teacher Mark Haddox, “Students can complete this program in four days, as long as they meet the requirements set forth by the “Site-Base Council.”
